DENVER - Surrounded by an enormous, adoring crowd, Barack Obama promised a clean break from the "broken politics in Washington and the failed policies of George W. Bush" Thursday night as he embarked on the final lap of his audacious bid to become the nation's first black president.
"America, now is not the time for small plans," the 47-year-old Democratic Illinois senator told an estimated 84,000 people packed into Invesco Field, a huge football stadium at the base of the Rocky Mountains.

Tourists, residents flee as Gustav swamps Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica - The spinning core of Gustav bore down on southern Jamaica on Thursday evening after leaving 67 people dead in Hispaniola.
At least 59 people died in Haiti from floods, mudslides and falling trees, including 25 around the city of Jacmel, where Gustav first struck land Tuesday.

New Orleans Levee Project Not Yet Complete

WASHINGTON _ The levees that ring New Orleans have been substantially fortified since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, but the Crescent City is still far from protected if Gustav or another large storm were to hit before 2011.

Boeing sends machinists final offer

Boeing Co. delivered a final contract offer to its union machinists Thursday that it said would boost pay by 11 percent on average over three years, the latest effort by the airplane maker to avoid a strike that could cost it millions of dollars a day.
